Memorial Tree Program

Arboretums are often begun for the sole purpose of collecting unique species of trees.  Here in Milford, the Arboretum was designed to serve a far more extensive set of goals.  While the Milford Legacy Arboretum (MLA) will continue and enhance the public uses of the City Green and surrounding open spaces, it is intended, also, to provide areas of quiet contemplation created by wooded areas along the City’s water courses and ponds.  Whether an area receives a single or multiple trees, the planners sought to balance functions and aesthetics with symmetry and breadth by interspersing exciting, colorful, ornamental trees with native species in all the Arboretum sectors.

The variety of uses of the MLA creates opportunities for people wishing to purchase a tree to mark special occasions or as a memoriam. The Arboretum partnership has placed trees donated by family and friends in memory of people active in community events on the Green as well as quiet memorials in less used areas.  The MLA design plan incorporates the on-going active and passive uses of more than 26 acres.  The choice of site and tree type enables contributors to select from among ornamental trees designated for groves along the upper Duck Pond, trees designed to provide shade and respite in the downtown center, The Green, or trees that are unique species possessing special surprise with their bark, flowers or leaf patterns planned for placement in the Parsons Complex area and Higby and Jefferson Parks.
